There is barely a work of literature that has been as misconstrued as the Kama Sutra.

The first translated edition was published in Europe in 1884.

And though the translator, even back then, omitted the really controversial bits, namely

the passages pertaining to homosexuality, it wasn't long before it was misinterpreted

and denounced as a bawdy compendium of sexual practices.
